Job Summary:

Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd, South Africas leading power utility, is seeking a highly skilled Control & Instrumentation Engineer to join our Hendrina Power Station team. The ideal candidate will play a critical role in ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of plant control and instrumentation systems. You will be responsible for monitoring, maintaining, and optimizing instrumentation, automation systems, and control equipment to support uninterrupted power generation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, implement, maintain, and troubleshoot control and instrumentation systems, including PLCs, SCADA, and DCS systems.

  • Conduct calibration, testing, and preventive maintenance of instruments and sensors to ensure accurate data collection and system performance.

  • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and operations teams to ensure integration of control systems across plant operations.

  • Analyze system performance and recommend upgrades or modifications for optimal efficiency and safety.

  • Ensure compliance with safety, quality, and environmental standards in all engineering activities.

  • Maintain accurate documentation of system configurations, modifications, and maintenance activities.

  • Provide technical support and guidance to operations staff on control system issues.

  • Participate in plant shutdowns, commissioning, and project implementation as required.


Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in Electrical, Control, or Instrumentation Engineering, or a related field.

  • Professional registration (ECSA) will be an advantage.

  • Strong knowledge of PLCs, DCS, SCADA systems, and industrial control equipment.

  • Proficient in instrumentation calibration, fault finding, and system optimization.

  • Knowledge of electrical schematics, control loops, and process instrumentation.

  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to work under pressure in operational environments.

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to work effectively in teams.


Experience:

  • Minimum of 3–5 years experience in power generation, industrial plants, or related engineering fields.

  • Proven experience in control and instrumentation engineering, including hands-on work with PLCs, DCS, and SCADA systems.

  • Experience in troubleshooting, maintenance, and system upgrades within a high-voltage or industrial setting is highly preferred.


Working Hours:

  • Full-time position; standard operating hours at the Hendrina Power Station apply.

  • Flexibility required for on-call duties, maintenance shutdowns, and emergency response as necessary.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Comprehensive understanding of power plant operations and control systems.

  • Strong analytical and critical thinking abilities.

  • Ability to interpret technical drawings, diagrams, and specifications.

  • Proficiency in using engineering software and diagnostic tools.

  • Commitment to workplace safety and adherence to Eskoms operational procedures.

  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams.
